Photography Competition Rules

Camera Obscura accepts for competition any photography-based artwork. The artwork need not consist exclusively of photography. Photography-based mixed media artworks are encouraged for submission, in addition to straight photography. Characteristics considered in judging these photographic artworks include:

  • artistic merit (use of the elements and principles of art and design, as well as artistic impact)
  • technical proficiency (including effective use of light)
Copyright of all images remains with the artist. Entering the competition does NOT constitute a usage agreement. We will not use your images for any purpose other than judging. In the event that the image is selected as a finalist, entrant will be notified and given a license/use agreement with Sfumato Press LLC (dba Camera Obscura Journal) granting permission for publication and promotional use of the images before the final judging on the image occurs.

*Unsure about the need for a model release. Here is an informative **resource** for making that determination. In this instance, photos published are not used for purposes of reportage and require releases on recognizeable subjects with limited exceptions.

All images submitted must have model and/or subject releases on file with the photographer when applicable. BY SUBMITTING AN IMAGE FOR COMPETITION, PHOTOGRAPHER WARRANTS AND REPRESENTS THAT SUCH RELEASES ARE ON FILE AND AGREES TO INDEMNIFY SFUMATO PRESS LLC (DBA CAMERA OBSCURA JOURNAL) AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS , COSTS, EXPENSES AND ATTORNEY'S FEES INCURRED BY SFUMATO PRESS LLC (DBA CAMERA OBSCURA JOURNAL). By accepting a prize in the competition, winners agree that Sfumato Press LLC (dba Camera Obscura Journal) shall not be liable for any loss or injury resulting from participation in the competition, acceptance or use of any prize, or any travel related thereto. All winners are solely responsible for payment of any taxes. This contest is void where prohibited.

The judging and determination of all winners is within the sole discretion of Sfumato Press LLC (dba Camera Obscura Journal) based upon the criteria listed above. If Camera Obscura Journal cancels the competition for any reason, refunds will be issued to all entrants in the amount of their entry fee.
